The Art of Getting By

Story behind my last minute project. (STORY!! i tell ya...)

Tuesday, November 14, 2006

Dear all. after receiving numerous complains about the last minute IO group project (refer to the last post), my lecturer proceeded to create a 'rationale' behind this project. heres:

Story behind project:

After graduating from NUS, you join a firm that does economics consulting along with a bunch of other people with similar backgrounds. It is your first day in office and all of you arrive there at 8:30 am and are waiting in the reception area. Suddenly, I come out of the office (or am entering the office). I am a pretty senior (maybe the no. 1 guy!) in the firm. I see you all and say, "Aha, so you are the new recruits." You all politely nod and smile. I say, "Glad to have you all here." I am about to walk off when with an afterthought I stop and ask you all, "So, have you been assigned any tasks as of yet?" One of you says, "No." I pounce(!) on the opportunity and say: "Aha, well, there is a very important project that I am currently working on. I have been told that such and such paper might be useful for this project. Why don’t you all look up this paper and prepare a report on it and give it to my secretary so-and-so within the next two weeks?" [Note that I might not even tell you the exact paper but simply say the name of the author or the approximate title or approximately when it came out and where and you might have to yourself search for the paper.] One of you tries to ask: "But what exactly are we …?" However, I cut the person off much before mid-sentence with a wave and "Come on, you must have done lots of stuff like this at the University; surely you can figure out how to do this." One of you tries to ask: "But what if we have problems, can we contact you …?" again, the same result: I cut the person off much before mid-sentence with: "No, no, I will be very busy with this project and will not have time; in fact I will be flying off in 3 hours and will be back in 2 weeks only, and there is no one else working on this project; anyways, this is such a simple task, given all your economics training, surely you can figure out what to do, I surely do not need to tell you anything, else (here I start to get irritated) I could have done the thing on my own, right. Ok, then; I will see the report from you in 2 weeks when I am back. Sorry, but I need to rush now." And I flash a smile at you, wave and am gone.

AND THERE YOU ALL HAVE THE PROJECT!!!

WHAT THE EFF!!!!!!!!!!! THIS GUY IS FULL OF NONSENSICAL RUBBISH!!!!! I SWEAR HE EITHER HAS NOTHING BETTER TO DO, OR IS TRYING TO REDEEM HIMSELF FOR THE STUDENT FEEDBACK. (ok not like the student feedback could do much damage to him. but whatever. rolls eyes. maybe i shall give him credit for his creativity.)
